Average cost is total money spent divided by total shares. Fees and commissions aren't included, and share counts in the target planner are rounded up to whole shares. This is arithmetic, not investment advice — a lower average doesn't make a losing position a good one.

Frequently asked questions

How is the average cost per share calculated?

Total money spent across all purchases divided by total shares owned — so it's weighted by how many shares you bought at each price, not a simple average of the prices.

How does the target-average planner work?

Enter the price you'd buy at and the average you want, and it solves for the number of extra shares needed, rounded up to whole shares. The target has to sit between your current average and the buy price — buying at a price can't push your average past that price.

Are fees and commissions included?

No — it uses only the share counts and prices you enter. To reflect fees, fold them into the price you enter for that purchase.
