Why is the registrant's name/email/address missing?

Almost all registrars redact personal contact details by default now (following GDPR and similar privacy rules), regardless of which lookup tool you use — this shows exactly what the registry publicly exposes, nothing is being hidden by this tool.

What's the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?

RDAP is the modern, structured-JSON replacement for the older plain-text WHOIS protocol. This tool uses whichever the domain's registry supports, normalized into one consistent format either way.

Why did the lookup fail for a domain I know exists?

Some newer or less common TLDs don't have a public RDAP/WHOIS source available, or the registry's server was temporarily unreachable — try again in a moment, or check the registry's own lookup tool directly for that specific TLD.
