Checking a cryptocurrency's price shouldn't require creating an account anywhere, but a lot of people default to opening an exchange app out of habit. Here's what that price actually is, and a faster way to check it.
The price you see is usually an aggregate
Unlike a stock, which trades on one primary exchange, a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin trades simultaneously across dozens of exchanges worldwide — Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and many others — each with its own order book and, at any given instant, a slightly different price. Most price trackers (this one included) show an aggregated, volume-weighted average across many exchanges rather than any single one's number. That's why a price you see on a tracker can differ by a small amount from what your specific exchange app shows — neither is wrong, they're just measuring slightly different things.
Why the price moves so much more than stocks
Crypto markets trade 24/7 with no closing bell, and many coins have relatively thin trading volume compared to major stocks — both factors make prices more volatile on a minute-to-minute basis. A stock might move 1-2% in a normal day; a mid-cap cryptocurrency moving that much in an hour isn't unusual. This isn't necessarily a signal of anything specific happening — it's a structural feature of how these markets trade.
Market cap vs. price: two different numbers
A coin's price alone doesn't tell you how large it is as an asset — that's what market cap (price × total circulating supply) measures. A coin priced at $0.001 with trillions of tokens in circulation can have a larger market cap than a coin priced at $50,000 with a limited supply. Price comparisons between different cryptocurrencies are close to meaningless without accounting for this.
