The Fear & Greed Index is a sentiment gauge, not a price indicator. It compresses several unrelated signals into a single score from 0 to 100: 0 means extreme fear, 100 means extreme greed. The idea behind it is that markets tend to overreact in both directions -- people sell in a panic when prices drop and pile in out of FOMO when they rise -- and the index tries to put a number on which of those two modes the market is currently in.
What feeds into the score
The crypto version of this index doesn't rely on price alone. It's built by combining several inputs so no single metric dominates the reading -- typically things like price volatility relative to recent averages, trading volume, social media sentiment and search trends, and shifts in market dominance (money rotating from bitcoin into higher-risk altcoins tends to read as greed, for example). Each input moves the score a little, and the combined result is meant to be harder to fake or misread than any one metric on its own.
Reading the scale
Scores are typically bucketed into ranges:
- 0-24: Extreme Fear
- 25-44: Fear
- 45-55: Neutral
- 56-75: Greed
- 76-100: Extreme Greed
The contrarian read that gets repeated a lot is that extreme fear can mean the market is overly pessimistic, and extreme greed can mean it's due for a pullback. That's a popular heuristic, not a rule -- sentiment can stay at an extreme for a long stretch, and the index describes current mood, not where price is headed next.
What it isn't
It isn't a trading signal on its own and it isn't a prediction. It's a snapshot of aggregate mood built from noisy, fast-moving inputs like social sentiment, and it can shift meaningfully from one day to the next. Treat it as one data point to consider alongside price action and fundamentals, not a replacement for either.
Why it updates daily
Sentiment moves quickly in crypto markets compared to, say, quarterly earnings data, so the index recalculates daily to reflect current conditions rather than leaving you looking at a stale snapshot from a week ago.
Track it
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index Tracker shows the current score along with a 7-day history, so you can see whether sentiment is trending toward greed or fear rather than judging the market off a single day's reading.
