Text Truncator

Trim text down to a set number of characters or words to fit a limit.

How to use Text Truncator

  1. Paste your text into the box.
  2. Choose whether the limit is in characters or words, and set the number.
  3. The truncated text and a trailing "…" appear automatically once it's over the limit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the suffix count toward the character or word limit?

No — the limit applies to how much of the original text is kept, and the suffix is appended afterward, so the final output can run a little longer than the number you set.

Will it cut a word in half in character mode?

It can — character mode slices at an exact character position regardless of word boundaries, though it does trim any trailing whitespace left dangling at the cut before adding the suffix.

Can I change the "..." to something else?

Yes — the suffix field is editable, up to 10 characters, so you could use a single ellipsis character, " [more]", or anything else you'd prefer.
