Gitignore Generator

NEW

Pick languages, frameworks, editors and OSes and get a ready .gitignore file, built entirely in your browser.

How to use Gitignore Generator

  1. Search or browse by category and tick every language, framework, editor and OS your project uses.
  2. Add anything project-specific — a secrets file, a local folder — in the custom patterns box.
  3. Copy the generated .gitignore, or download it directly as a file named ".gitignore".

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick more than one language or framework?

Yes — select as many as apply (e.g. Node.js + Next.js + VS Code + macOS) and they're combined into one file, each under its own labeled section.

What if I already have a .gitignore?

Append the generated output to your existing file rather than overwriting it, or copy only the sections you need — Git ignores duplicate patterns harmlessly, so overlap isn't a problem.

Can I add my own patterns?

Yes — use the custom patterns box to add anything specific to your project, like a local secrets file or a build folder with a non-standard name. It's appended as its own section at the end.

Does a pattern here apply to files Git is already tracking?

No — .gitignore only affects untracked files. If a file is already committed, remove it from Git's tracking first (git rm --cached <file>) and it will then be ignored going forward.
